When Your Nice You Get Screwed

Well a few weeks went by, I passed courier school and now just learning my route.. The Friday before a 3 day weekend my mgr Mikey comes to me and says hey would you like to work Saturday and do pickups it would be good for you to learn the city and so an so would like the day off for his kids what do you say..I say OK what the hell right Ill help someone out and learn while I was at it..

Once again I asked just this one part of the city right ? she says yea sure, OK its a plan

Well I come in grab my courier van and my equipment and off I went, at first everything was fine then after two hours I get hammered with pick ups all over the place after a while I call dispatch and say I’m only supposed to do this area.. He laughs a lil and says who told you that ? I said Mikey he laughs again any Say’s she’s not even a Saturday manager and misinformed you..He Say’s Ill help you the best I can but your on your own there is only one other courier out there and he’s doing the other city..

So 12 hours and 100 miles later, no break,no lunch I get done and back to the building very very very late for a Saturday an a lil help from the other courier it gets done and I go home..

I come back on Tuesday and Mikey says I need to see you in my office I say OK what ? … She Say’s you worked over 12 hours on Saturday, no break and came back to the building late. I say yea but you didn’t tell me everything, I could not take a break or else I would have late pick ups and the map you gave me did not show the whole area you gave me to do..

Without even blinking she goes I am giving you a counseling and you have to sign here, I say so I’m getting a reprimand for helping you out and you weren’t clear on what I had to do ?

Silence filled the office alone with a blank stare she was giving me, I mean no emotion no anything just sign here..

Awww helll so I signed the friggin thing to be done with it, It was bullshit tho  not even a month in the station and screwed twice

The Big Move

Well a year and a half went by an I decided to transfer to another state, hey I was 22 heading towards 23 and decided to move where its warm and the girls were hot. I also took a job upgrade to a courier position. Which was probably the biggest mistake of my life, In Newark my eyes were starting to open.. Now they stay open and don’t ever shut them again !

I put in for a Tuesday through Saturday courier position, and E-mail the Manager we will call Mikey and say in the E-mail do you want me Monday or Tuesday ( I always think ahead just in case) She says no come in on Tuesday.. I say OK it gives me an extra day to settle in, so for the next 4 days they are showing me the route and the ropes before I go to courier school. Now don’t forget I’m still naive to this state, I really didn’t think it was gonna be that different from Jersey.. WRONG !

Friday afternoon I punch in and Mgr Mikey say hey I’m leaving early today and we changed your route to Monday thru Friday  so you don’t have to come in to work tomorrow..But you start courier school on Monday ..I say OK but are you sure about tomorrow cause I only worked four days this week can I still come in and get my fifth day..

She says No We Don’t Do That Here !

Oh I was sooooooooo friggin pissed, here I am just moving I went from full time down to part time I E-mailed her and asked her of ANY changes and she pulls this shit on me.. Hell I would of come in and did the offload for an hour but nooooooooooooooo

Then at that time I realized that I wasn’t in Newark anymore Toto and what the hell is gonna happen next

Where It All Began 1989

Well I was 18 years old just graduated High School and was delivering auto parts in Kearney N.J. waiting for a job interview at Newark Airport for this place called Federal Express. I never even heard of the company, saw the ad spots every now an then but you know I was a Teenager I didn’t pay any attention whatsoever..

A few weeks and a few calls went by an got my interview, I gotta admit she was pretty hot but never the less I got the job an feelin pretty good about myself the hours were 11 pm to 4 am in the morning on the airport ramp loading and unloading airplanes it was friggin cool.. But for the next 4 years I worked a full-time day job at the parts store then back to the gas station I worked at all through High School..So I was up at least 20 hours a day during the week, I dont know how I did it but I had my falling asleep on the job moments..

All my managers were super cool and actually helped me out, if it was cold and I did not have my uniform yet they would give me theirs.. If I needed something they would take the time and order it for me. If I had a question they would answer it, and I mean with out thinking and actually knowing it type of answer no Ummm Uhhh Ill get back to you.. They would actually say hey how are you and how was the work night..

The older guys were great and really taught me the ramp and how things go, now dont forget this was my  first job with a hugeeeeeeee group of others outside my neighborhood so I had a lot of learning to do and growing up to do to I just did not realize it yet..

I thought EVERYBODY worked like me right, well wrong I learned no matter how cool the guy is or how hot the girl is they can be lazier than 30 pound house cat

I also learned not everybody will like you for some-kind of bullshit reason, your race, your decent or what the hell ever and they will screw with you, I had a ramp agent have a hard-on for me forrrrrrr years until I transferred to another state..But everybody knew I was a good guy and a hard worker and all his accusations were bullshit so they always took my side over his anyway

I look back at this time as the best time I ever had in this company
